Getting Started with Vialogues
The first step in this lesson is an introduction to the use of vilogues and how this tool will support reflection of content, increase collaboration and assessment opportunities. The steps include logging into Vialogue, creating an account, creating a vialogue, making vialogue private, accessing vialogues, managing vialogues, managing groups, topic description, privacy settings, defining vialogue, and embedding video assessment. Skills that are needed in order to function in Vialogue are those of common internet navigation.
What is a Vialogue?
A vialogue is an online video with a group discussion feature. Vialogue allows users to interact with videos by adding time stamped comments in the dialogue section as the video is playing. This is a great tool to engage participants in video discussion. A user can encourage thoughtful conversation by posing questions, adding polls, and replying to comments.
The performance objectives for these tasks are:
- After completing this lesson users will be able to define the use of a vialogue with a high level of competency.
- After completing this lesson users will be able to demonstrate the ability to login into a vialogue account and manage its components in the dashboard.
- After completing this lesson users will create a vialogue.
- After completing this lesson users will be able to distribute their vialogue to a group and engage in shared collaboration.
- After completing this lesson users will be show the ability to embed vialogues into a website.
Steps:
Logging into Vialogues
- Go to www.vialogues.com
- Click on the “sign up” button on the Vilogues homepage or “Create an EdLab Account” at the top page.
- Fill in your details and click “Create an EdLab Account”.
- Click on the “Log In” link at the top right of Vialogues’ navigation bar.
- To log out, click on your name at the upper-right of the Vialogies navigation bar.
- From the drop-down menu, click on “Log Out”.
- Make sure you are logged in.
- Click create
- There are three options!
- Create New: Upload a video from your computer or a variety of other sources.
- Create from Existing: Choose a video from the list of public videos in vialogues.
- Create from External: Embed a video from YouTube or Vimeo by providing the videos URL.
- Define your vialogue. Use descriptive titles that clearly convey what the vialogue is about.
- In the next field, provide directions for the participants (what to look for in the video, context questions, and how to get involved in the discussion).
- Set who can participate in your vialogue. Either private or public option, click on which you prefer.
- When you’re done, click the “Create Vialogue” button.
- After loggin in, you will see some of your vialogues featured on your homepage. Click “See All” to view all of your vialogues.
- You can also see all of your vialogues and videos by visiting your profile page by clicking your name in the right-hand corner and selecting “Profile” in the drop-down menu. (Back to top)
- You can only manage a vialogue if you are its moderator.
- Go to the vialogue and click on the Gear icon found below the video.
- Now you can edit the title, description, who can participate, and who can moderate. You can also grant and deny requests from users who have asked to join your private vialogue.
- From the profile page, click on the thumbnail of the web video that you would like to update. (be sure to click on the one form under your videos and from under vialogues).
- On the next page, click on the “Edit Video” button. (Back to top)
- Click on the “My Groups” link in the drop down menu on the top right of the navigation bar.
- If you are part of any groups as a participant or moderator it will show here. Clicking on a group’s title will display all of the vialogues belonging to that group. From this page you can edit groups that you moderate and create new groups.
- Click on the “Create new” button at the top of the page.
- Make sure you are logged in.
- Enter you comment in the comment box and click “Post” to submit. The comment be attached to a time code (eg. 00:07). Your comment will appear in the discussion panel in order of its time code.
- There is no limit to how many characters you can post in a comment. All comments are truncated after 3 lines. In order to see a full post, you must click on “More>>”
How to add a Poll/Question to a Vialogue
- To add a question, click on the question tab below the video. In the same way that you added a comment, you will add a question or poll to this box.
- Choose either “Multiple choice” or “Check all that apply”
- Enter options. You may add up to 26 per question.
- Click “Post” to submit. (Back to top)
- On the vialogue page just below the video player, click on “Embed”. A textbox with HTML code will appear.
- Copy the HTML code into the textbox and past it in your blog or website. Your site must support HTML editing in order to embed the vialogue.
- *To ensure optimal performance of the embedded vialogue, make sure you are using the newest versions of Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.
