Welcome to the Effective Writing Center!

Hi! My name is Claire Phillips, and it's my pleasure to be in your WRTG 394 classroom to assist you with your assignments. I will be reviewing your work as you post portions of it on the discussion boards.

While we are together, the best way to reach me with questions or concerns is to post in one of the threads or email me: claire.phillips@umuc.edu. I'll be sure to check our discussions at least once a day as we work on your assignments, one part at a time.

More Services
As a UMUC student, you have other resources for writing help available to you in addition to this workshop. Check out the videos below for a quick guide to our Database and Live Advising services.

The EWC also has a Web Index with a variety of useful tutorials on organization, grammar, and mechanics that you can check out any time. And don't miss the Effective Writing Center's YouTube channel of writing workshops recorded live.

Free Review of Your Rough Drafts

Yes, it's free: the Writing Review Service offered by UMUC's Effective Writing Center. You can have your writing reviewed in two ways. Both are completely confidential.

First, you can submit your work to the EWC's database advising service using your MyUMUC account. Your work is assigned to an EWC adviser, who will review and check the paper, then respond directly to you via email with comments and suggestions within 48 hours or less. Here is a video that shows you how to submit your work to the EWC advisers:

Second is the EWC's live, synchronous advising program where you meet online with a live adviser and go over your paper together. Here is a video that shows you how to do that:

Whichever option that you choose, you will receive confidential, expert advice on how to make your writing better, no matter the subject. Take advantage of these excellent--and free--resources for all UMUC students.
